Travel Links By State and other helpful links

Last updated Sunday, October 16, 2011 07:42 PM

This section contains pointers and information regarding locations to visit.  The intent is to cut out some of the advertising you have to pour over to find out what you really want to know.  There are also links to travelogues that will have information on what to do, how to do it and answers like "can I park my RV here?".  If there is something you would like added, changed, etc, drop us a line.  E-Mail: webman @ rvtreasure.com

RV Park Reviews   This is a site that's getting better and better as time goes along.  I've left reviews here and have checked it for RV park facilities.  This provides a lot of user reviews so you can get different perspectives from people who camped at a park.  This may be the site of preference in the future.

National Scenic Byways   Information on some great roads to travel in the US. They're called the National Scenic Byways.  If you get a chance to take one don't pass them by.  We had the opportunity to take the San Juan Skyway in Colorado and it was gorgeous!!  A word of caution on this one, the drive from Ouray to Durango has some pretty hair raising twists and turns, a narrow road, a tunnel or two and some really steep hills.   Here is a link to the page  we have on the San Juan.  If you look at the San Juan map you will find that all over this area is the San Juan Skyway.

Emergency Phone Numbers by State  Contains emergency phone numbers and road condition information sorted by state.

National Forests  U.S. Forest Service.  View California's 18 national forests with an incredible array of outdoor recreational opportunities.

NPS map of Death Valley - Link to the NPS site for Death Valley  Hottest, Driest, Lowest:  Death Valley is a land of extremes.  It is one of the hottest places on the surface of the Earth with summer temperatures averaging well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.  It encompasses the lowest point in the Western Hemisphere at 282 feet below the level of the sea, and it is the driest place in North America with an average rainfall of only 1.96 inches a year.

This valley is also a land of subtle beauties:  Morning light creeping across the eroded badlands of Zabriskie Point to strike Manly Beacon, the setting sun and lengthening shadows on the Sand Dunes at Stovepipe Wells, and the colors of myriad wildflowers on the golden hills above Harmony Borax on a warm spring day.

Death Valley is a treasure trove of scientific information about the ancient Earth and about the forces still working to shape our modern world.  It is home to plants, animals, and human beings that have adapted themselves to take advantage of its rare and hard won bounty.  It is a story of western expansion, wealth, greed, suffering and triumph.  Death Valley is a land of extremes, and much more.

Colorado:

Colorado State Parks - This is a pointer to the Colorado State Parks home page

Garden of the Gods Trip report - June 1999 -  Colorado Springs Trip report not started - It's free and it's beautiful.

Garden of the Gods Trading Post -  Colorado Springs. Part museum, art gallery, souvenir shop and cafe, plan on spending a couple of hours here.  It's a great place with lots of nice things to buy, plenty of eye candy and a great place to eat.

Great Sand Dunes National Monument Trip report - June 1999 -  Trip report not started - I rode for three hours to see this?  From 12 miles out it looks a lot like a big sand pile.

Lathrop Map - Link to Colorado State Parks for Lathrop.  Nestled in the shadow of the legendary Spanish Peaks, which tower over the park, Lathrop State Park's gentle climate, clear air, beautiful campsites, excellent fishing, water skiing and great views of the nearby mountain ranges lure Colorado travelers and other visitors to the park for regular visits.  The state's first state park, Lathrop is 1,594 acres of recreational enjoyment.  The park has two lakes, Martin Lake and Horseshoe Lake, which offer a variety of boating and angling opportunities.  A nine-hole golf course at the park is also popular.  Stop by the Lathrop Visitors Center for a look at artists' murals showcasing the area's rich history and heritage, and access information about the surrounding area. Directions - Three miles west of Walsenburg on U.S. Highway 160.  Lathrop State Park, 70 County Rd 502, Walsenburg, CO 81089, (719) 738-2376 (phone), (email) lathrop.park@state.co.us

Montrose, Colorado - Link to Montrose information.  Montrose makes a good base camp, and by the way it's in the area of some great places to visit; Ridgeway were the John Wayne movie "True Grit" was made, Telluride (as great to see in the summer as to ski in the winter), Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Silverton, Durango, Ouray (pronounced "You Ray" if you don't want the locals snickering at you).  Don't miss any of these. If you want a free thrill ride, tow your rig from Ouray to Silverton. If that doesn't get your adrenaline up nothing will or perhaps you may be emotionally deceased.  I didn't have the courage to tow out of Ouray after seeing 1/3 of one lane had broken off and slid down the side of the mountain so I took the road out of Telluride across Lizardhead Pass.

Ridgway Map of "Dutch Charlie" camping area Ridgway Map of "Pa-Co-Chu-Puk"camping area  - Link to Colorado State Parks for Ridgway

Outstanding scenery, ultra-modern facilities, a full-service marina and magnificent campgrounds beckon visitors to Ridgway State Park.  Here you can boat, fish, camp, hike and study nature in one of the most beautiful areas in Colorado.

Ridgway's great outdoors provides views of the towering Sneffels Range, the "Switzerland of America." Located 12 miles north of Ouray, Ridgway's sandy swim beach, beach house and full-service marina make it a top choice for water-sports enthusiasts. Boating, scuba diving, water-skiing, windsurfing and swimming are some of the offerings at the park. Picnicking and camping are great ways to spend your time. In addition, Ridgway is known as one of the nation's most accessible recreation areas for people with disabilities.

Curecanti Map - National Park Service link to Curecanti  -

Three reservoirs, named for corresponding dams on the Gunnison River, form the heart of Curecanti National Recreation Area.  Panoramic mesas, fjord-like reservoirs, and deep, steep and narrow canyons abound.

Blue Mesa Reservoir is Colorado's largest body of water, and is the largest Kokanee Salmon fishery in the United States.  Morrow Point Reservoir is the beginning of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison and below, Crystal Reservoir is the site of the Gunnison Diversion Tunnel, a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.  Recently discovered dinosaur fossils, a 5,000 acre archeological district, a narrow gauge train, and traces of 6000 year old dwellings further enhance the offerings of Curecanti.

Missouri

This is Missouri Tourism. It's a state operated site covering everything you ever wanted to do or see in Missouri. Here is a quote from the site and it's really true. "They call Missouri the Gateway to the West for good reason. Whether by water or wagon, railroad or Mother Road, your adventure begins here.  Missouri is the crossroads of some of America's most hallowed paths. Like Lewis and Clark, launch your historic journey in Missouri. Let this site help you chart a memorable course.  Whatever your pace, enjoy your stay in Missouri and, hurry back!"

If you select campgrounds from the homepage it takes you to a search engine that will allow you to search by region, lodging type and then amenities such as RV, Tenting, Trails, etc.

You can request a free Missouri Travel kit too. "The free Missouri Travel Kit includes the Missouri Travel Guide, Calendar of Events and Official Highway Map. The Travel Guide is your passport to a wide world of special attractions in Missouri. State parks, theaters, museums, amusement parks, historical attractions and more are all listed to help you plan your trip. Plus, the guide contains information about motels, hotels, resorts, bed-and-breakfast homes and inns, campgrounds and RV parks, along with phone numbers to call for reservations."

Oklahoma:

Yes, our home is in Oklahoma, but I must admit Oklahoma has come a long way with their state parks. I was duly impressed when we made a few trips this summer to rediscover our own state. We made Boiling Springs our base camp and visited Little Sahara State Park, Alabaster Caverns, the Great Salt Plains, Fort Supply and the only remaining sod house in the state. I highly recommend the trips. More on these later.

Oklahoma State Parks - Getting better every year. This is a link with a map of the state parks and the option to list them by region or name.
